Hello, Bastion!

Well... it's been a while since we've had an update! I'm not going to lie to you, our last test was a bit of a blow to morale for the team. As referenced in our official postmortem (visible to Closed Testing Participants only), we expressed that there was a large disparity between the level of roleplay we expect and the level of roleplay that was on display. Unlike Test 02, we are afraid to report that Test 03 was, in our minds, a failure. However, what's done is done. Now, we can only take the lessons learned from last test and use it to improve upon our current offerings and shift ourselves in the direction we need to go in order to make good on our promise on the most immersive roleplay server DayZ has to offer.

Fortunately, we learned a ton.

First off, I think it's safe to say that one of the reasons Test 02 worked so well in comparison to Test 03 was due to the novelty factor. Many of the participants were far removed from Bastion's development, and for most, this was their first real taste of the idea of Bastion, as well as the work we've done to make that idea a reality. New is interesting and exciting, and that "newness" of the test was a big part of the success of that test.

We didn't have the same advantage in Test 03. Now that the novelty of exploring the what currently exists of the map and the new functionality we've added so far has worn off, testers are now looking for what's next. What is there to actually do in Bastion? Where's the game? Without an answer for those questions, a few testers took it upon themselves to find things to do - things that we don't promote or appreciate within a roleplay environment. For example, killing without rhyme or reason or throwing themselves into certain death for a chance at obtaining a firearm. Let me make clear - this is not allowed. Please treat these tests as you would the full release of the experience - and if someone's treatment of the full experience would be to rush ISF Agents without value for life, perhaps this is not the right environment for that person.

However, this does not address the elephant in the room - the game. Where is it? We've heard you loud and clear. While we're not sure if these functionalities will make it into the next test session, we can assure you that we are working very hard to make three functionalities fully operational: Crafting, Jobs, and Housing. I've personally taken to calling them "The Big Three" - there should be enough content and depth within these three functionalities, along with roleplay, to support a long-term test or even a 24/7 Closed Testing Server.

 

Extended Crafting

"Wait, but there's already a crafting system in-game!" True. However, our vision for crafting exceeds the current limitations of the small-scale crafting system that DayZ has to offer. We envision a game world in which crafting is a core mechanic and major backbone of the citizen economy and the day-to-day gameplay of the server - even more than looting.

In order to do this, we needed to take a step back and see what problems within the current crafting system we could solve, as well as what new features we could build in to increase the depth of this mechanic. We've identified that a problem with the current crafting system is that while simple recipes work well within the current crafting system, attempting to craft a complex recipe quickly becomes tedious and convoluted, requiring many evolutions to get to the final result. We are solving this problem by implementing a Crafting UI. (think Minecraft/Rust/etc).

Then, in order to increase depth, we've added in two extra facets of crafting - blueprint books and workstations. Blueprint books are books of recipes, each involving a different theme or subject matter. These books must be found within the game world and be within the player's inventory in order to be able to craft related items. For example, a book titled Sewing 101 would allow a citizen to craft a variety of simple shirts, pants, etc, while a book about Eastern Bloc weaponry would allow a player to craft Eastern-style weaponry. Workstations are items in the game world that require you to be near them in order to craft certain items. These stations would be craftable, but some would also spawn in predetermined locations. So far, we've brainstormed three potential workstations: woodworking bench, metalworking bench, and textile machine. For an example, in order to craft high quality wooden furniture, you'd need to interact with a woodworking bench at some point during your crafting process.

Some crafting blueprints would be time dependent, as well. For example, smelting a handgun slide from scrap metal would take a certain amount of real-world time to do. This forces citizens to get creative about when and where they craft high risk, high reward items.

Jobs

We've noticed that many citizens are looking for ways to increase their earning potential past their normally allotted Universal Basic Income. So, we're working on implementing a few simple jobs for citizens to take on. We're still a bit early stages on this, but we're looking at implementing simple jobs such as restocking the AION vending machines, delivering packages from A to B, producing AION, repairing faulty CCTV cameras, among others.

 

Housing

Last but certainly not least, we're working on a citywide embedded housing system that will allow citizens to seamlessly rent property using their hard-earned NCC Credits. Staff members will be able to zone rent-able property and citizens will be able to access a terminal to rent the property. After renting the property, citizens will be able to customize their property by crafting (or purchasing) furniture and other items that will have both roleplay and gameplay uses.

 

All of this sounds well and good, but when can you expect these functionalities to roll out? The short answer is, simply, we're not entirely sure. We're working hard on Housing at the moment, but depending on how our team grows over the next few weeks, it wouldn't be out of the question for at least one or two of the big three to roll out within the next couple of months.

 

However, the next test is in two weeks, not in a couple of months - what can you expect by that time?

 

New Assets

We have made some pretty hefty additions to our team of artists, modelers, and importers, and as such, we have made some improvements and additions to our library of custom assets. These changes include, but are not limited to:

  • A new shotgun for the ISF to use for lethal and non-lethal scenarios
  • A taser for the ISF to use in non-lethal scenarios (via X2Taser!)
  • A custom NCC Banner for use as a map object
  • NCC billboards and signage
  • Fixes and tweaks to all of our firearms

 

Banking Quality of Life

We weren't able to get the recommended Quality of Life improvements for banking done in time for Test 03; however, we will have them done for this test. We are introducing some quality of life changes to the system, including adding support for a password reset, showing you the characters of your password as asterisks, and adding in a "password confirmation" step during account registration to ensure that the password you've selected is the correct one.

 

Map Updates

We are making more improvements to the sector system that citizens may have seen implemented in our last test. We're working to make the divisions mesh a bit more with the existing structures so that the walls are more seamless. We're also working on increasing the "quarantine zone" factor, making the city feel more run-down and claustrophobic.

 

Body Bag V2

An impromptu job of cleaning up bodies is now possible with Body Bag V2, which comes with a biocompactor to store corpses in. These compactors are spawnable via a config. You'll be seeing them around Korolgrad for next test.

 

Public Announcements System

In order to increase the immersion factor as well as replace global messages for security announcements, we're working on developing a Public Announcements System that uses MP3 files in order to play pre-recorded announcements. The potential for such a system is near limitless - from using it for changes in security level, to providing general ambiance, to injecting lore snippets and updates! We're really excited about rolling it out for next test.


How to Join

In order to be eligible for CTS 04 (and future Closed Testing Sessions), you must complete the whitelist. After completing the whitelist, you will be granted access to complete the Closed Testing Sessions application. After both of these prerequisites are fulfilled, you will receive the correct forum and Discord tags and be granted access to the Closed Testing Sessions!
