Hi everyone and welcome to the second SITREP! We have some new things to share with you, although it may not be as big as an update this time around. Most of the our updates this time revolve around the website and developments to the community for things like our rules and the lore. Some in-game development updates are still present, however!
 
Our wonderfully talented mapper, ZeRoY, is on vacation this week, so we do not have anything new for you regarding the map's progress; we'll have to save that for next SITREP! In the meantime, however, we'd love to share our progress on another important part of the community; our website! Over the past couple of weeks we have made great strides in adding or enhancing the styling and functionality of the website in order to increase immersion, including the introduction of our all-new character creator and our interactive world map!
 

New Website Features

First, we'll talk about the character creator. Inspired by other roleplaying communities as well as our own lore, our new character creator allows every member of the community to customize and personalize their character on their own character page, and then have the most vital pieces of information formatted automatically into a nice, clean, in-character representation of their NCC Identification Card. Here is a quick video walkthrough of what some of the pages look like:
 
 
We want this character creator to be more than just fancy bells and whistles for the website. We plan on fully integrating this application into the game world, as an in-character method of obtaining information about a character. For example, an NCC guard might ask a civilian for his ID. The civilian would provide his ID number, and then the NCC will be able to access the civilian's ID in seconds just by searching on through the character database. This feature is still in-development, but expect the first release of this character creator to arrive onto the BastionRP website within a week. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions for the design or functionality of the character creator, or unique and fun ways to incorporate it in game, please don't hesitate to let us know!
 
Another feature coming soon to BastionRP is our interactive world map. This is a tool that we primarily intend to use as an "interactive aid" of sorts alongside the lore in order to give community members a better visual understanding of the scope of the NCC, the territories they own, the Bastions they administrate, as well as the general state of the world in the late 2030s. We only have one item for viewing so far; Korolgrad, the city and region our citizens will inhabit on BastionRP. We plan to add more icons and zones as our lore becomes further defined as we near launch. No need for a video, because you can begin testing it out now! Check out our interactive world map here.
 
Finally, we've developed a few new forum perks since our last SITREP, including background images on posts, glowing usernames, custom titles, and custom borders, in order to allow supporters of the community to personalize their profiles and posts while using the forums. For further information on this, feel free to check out our donations page here.
 

Mod Functionality

Now we've got something real special to show you. As we shared in the last SITREP, most players will be relegated to the city, so finding fun and allowing character and player progression from within the city will be one of our primary challenges to overcome moving forward. One of the new functionalities we want to create in accordance with this goal is player housing - allowing the NCC to designate certain buildings for civilians to rent or own in exchange for enough ration cards.

In order to achieve this, we needed to create a mod that allowed an easy and persistent solution to lock doors to buildings, in order to allow players to safely store their valuables. Luckily, we came into contact with RoomService, who is now a programmer for BastionRP, who created this awesome functionality for persistent locking and unlocking of doors via a passcode. Check it out below:

The Guns

Our lovely texture artist Hop has been hard at work at creating and importing new gun and item models for use at BastionRP. The pictures should speak for themselves, so we will let them. See below:

The Rules

Next up are the the rules - our project lead Cipher has come up with our community's rules which may be subject to change as we near release, but for now they should give you a good idea of what to expect. Our ruleset is a light one with a heavy focus on roleplaying instead of always having to worry about "ticking the boxes" for something to happen. As long as the situation is a realistic one and everyone involved appreciates the roleplay, then for us it's good enough.
 
We will be trialing this ruleset come Alpha release on the server to see if they work well in practice. We believe that because of the heavy in-game presence of the NCC, which will act as an in-game enforcer, we can offload the enforcement of rules like KOS and RDM to the NCC, in order to handle it from an in-game perspective instead of an OOC one.
 
Below are the current community rules:

The BastionRP rules are not static. While we will do our best to write rules that ensure ensure a consistent and consistently fun gameplay experience, the fact of the matter is that the rules are subject to change as the community grows and evolves. We will notify players via a forum announcement of any changes, so not being aware of a recent rules update is not an excuse to break the rules. We recommend taking a frequent look at them in order to refresh yourself, as well as note any changes.
 

1 - COMMUNITY GUIDELINES

BastionRP is a mature roleplaying community with one goal - provide high quality roleplay. Immaturity is detrimental to that goal, and so we have a zero tolerance policy for any form of internet drama, bullying, harassment, etc. Handle it outside the realm of our services, or be faced with a permanent ban.
 
Definitions
BastionRP Services - includes but is not limited to: game servers, forums, TeamSpeak servers, Discord servers, Steam groups, or other places of official congregation for BastionRP community members.
 
1.1 - Because of the mature content and themes displayed within BastionRP services, BastionRP has an age limit of 16 years or older.
 
1.2 - We require our members to be polite and mature, and treat each other with respect while using BastionRP services. Do not insult, provoke, bully, or otherwise harass other members of BastionRP, or demean their viewpoints, opinions and/or ideas while using our services. If you have a problem, take it outside!
 
1.3 - Do not spam, excessively self-promote, advertise, share referral codes, exploit bugs, or otherwise disrupt the functionality of BastionRP services.
 
1.4 - All content shared through BastionRP services must be Safe For Work. Similarly, while language is not censored in-game, we abide by a strict no-tolerance policy for racial, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise offensive terms while posting on the Forums and on Discord.
 
1.5 - Do not impersonate staff members while using BastionRP services.
 
1.6 - Do not harbor permanently banned players on BastionRP services. If you come into contact with a permanently banned player, immediately report them to a staff member. Failing to do so may result in your punishment for harboring a permanently banned player.
 

2 - FAIR PLAY GUIDELINES

BastionRP is not your typical survival/PVP server. We expect all of our members to play and roleplay fairly and with the interest of keeping the game fun and interesting for as many parties as possible. We do not tolerate an "us versus them" mentality out-of-character; we expect our players to play and roleplay with fairness and respect for the person on the other end of the screen.
 
2.1 - Cheating, hacking, or otherwise tampering on the BastionRP game servers, or any DayZ server, will result in an immediate and permanent ban from BastionRP services.
 
2.2 - You may not exploit bugs or gameplay mechanics for any reason. Examples would be loot cycling, placing objects (such as storage containers) inside normally impossible-to-reach areas, or placing and using an object that would normally be destructible in real life, such as a tent, as an indestructible cover object.
 
2.3 - Remember that this is a game. Don't be a bad sport - repeatedly killing the same people over and over again just because you can and without any roleplay reasoning, or otherwise destroying the gameplay experience for other players. Similarly, don't be a sore loser - holding a grudge or being upset about lost items, lost characters, etc.
 

3 - ROLEPLAY GUIDELINES

BastionRP puts roleplay first, always. We relaxed many rules when compared to typical roleplay servers (such as KOS/RDM rules) in order to provide a more authentic and immersive gameplay and roleplay experience. We did this with the expectation that our community members would not abuse them. Always play with your character in mind, not PVP or your gear.
 
3.1 - While on the BastionRP game servers, you must roleplay your character at all times. Do not ignore other players attempting to roleplay with you.
 
3.2 - You may not go "OOC" - Out of Character - while in-game, over voice communications. In an emergency situation, you may use the "OOC" prefix. For example - "OOC AFK 3 minutes". OOC is not meant for discussions of any kind. For example, "OOC did you see that new John Wick though?" is not allowed while in-game.
 
3.3 - You must, at all times, value the life and general well-being of your character. Do not place yourself into immediately fatal yet easily avoidable scenarios. Examples include: trying to win an open gunfight while being heavily outnumbered, excessively insulting your captors, attempting supreme feats of athleticism with a great risk of death when there is no need, etc.
 
3.4 - You may not act in a trollish manner while in roleplay. Examples include: using Twitch memes or other internet gags excessively in roleplay, running around in circles for no reason, etc. Think about how you would act or speak in public in real life, and try not to deviate too heavily from that.
 
3.5 - You may use OOC communications (TeamSpeak, Discord) while not in an immediate roleplay scenario - however, the roleplay comes first and always. Mute or disconnect from OOC communications while in an active roleplay scenario.
 
3.6 - You may not metagame - that is, use information obtained in an OOC manner, in-character. An example of this would be acting on information about a base or stash that you obtained through a Twitch stream, Discord chat, TeamSpeak channel, or on the forums.
 
3.7 - You may not powergame - that is, force an action, reaction, thought, or other character attribute on another character without their written consent. For example, emoting scarring someone without their consent via the text chat.
 
3.8 - We do not have any rules pertaining to KoS or RDM. However, be prepared for IC consequences when killing another player, especially within the city's walls. For example, killing many players in a short amount of time and then being caught by the NCC can subject you to execution and a subsequent permanent death.

Lore Update
For this week’s lore snippet, we’d like to give you an insight into Korolgrad through the ages. As always, this lore was written by our Operator @marvolo. We asked him for some background information for the city and he asked a few questions, ran off for a few days and then returned with this:

“Bastion 023 (BKG-023), previously known as Korolgrad/Korolhrad (Ukrainian: Корoльград, Russian: Коро́льгра́д, literally King’s town) is a port city on the Korol river (a right tributary of the Dnieper river) in Kherson Oblast (province), southern Ukraine. It was designated Bastion 023 on November 2 2027 after the NCC announced the start of Operation Bastion.

The origins of Korolgrad begin as early as 1639 in a time when Zaporozhian Cossacks constructed a number of sichs - fortress settlements acting as administrative/military centres - along the shores of the Dnieper river. One such sich was Krolʹzychu Sich, though this settlement would last just 17 years before being overrun and subsequently razed by Tatars in 1656.

The site of this historical stronghold would fade into obscurity until over a century later; in 1794 the Russian Empire headed by Catherine the Great sought to restore the ruined fortress and establish a village around it. The unusually mountainous region provided excellent natural defences to those situated within it, and so the village of Korolgrad and its surrounding farmland prospered and grew. 

In 1829 the village obtained town privileges, and once the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (UkSSR) seized control of much of Ukraine in 1919, the town was reclassified to an urban-type settlement due to its population of 2,200. Stalin’s first five-year plan in 1928 saw Korolgrad (as well as many other cities) start to transform from a small agrarian town into a bustling industrial city. 

This development would continue until WWII and Operation Barbarossa led to a brief period of German occupation under Reichskommissariat Ukraine. This lasted from 2 September 1941 to November 12 1943 when Korolgrad was released by the 4th Ukrainian Front during the Battle of the Dnieper. 

The city had been devastated by the war. Its farms had been ransacked, over 35% of its housing was destroyed, and damages to railway lines and factories meant that a significant amount of money, time, and labour would be required in order to return it to its former state. Even more troublingly, Korolgrad’s population had declined some 40% due to casualties sustained during the war.

Following the end of WWII in 1945, Stalin’s fourth and fifth five-year plans involved allocating one third of German reparations received by the USSR to Ukraine. By 1949, displaced populace in the vicinity of Korolgrad flocked to aid in its reconstruction, and within 10 years reconstruction efforts fuelled by increasing demands of the Cold War allowed Korolgrad to rebuild once more.

Industrial development within Korolgrad continued throughout the 20th century, and a number of khrushchyovka were built during the early 1960's to house its rising population. Food production was Korolgrad’s most prominent industry; most factories dealt with crops from communal farms or fish from the Korol river, and its port was modernised in 1966 in accordance with the USSR’s aim to double its agricultural output by 1970.

In 1973, Korolgrad was granted municipal rights and was officially recognised as a city, and in 1984 it was awarded the rank of “city of oblast significance” by the Verkhovna Rada. When the USSR finally dissolved in 1991, Korolgrad had reached its capacity of over 20,000 occupants, though its population would begin decreasing soon after this; Ukraine’s 2020 Census estimated that around 2,300 people had departed the city since 2001.

A debate regarding the city’s name sparked in 2016 when Korolgrad’s name was changed to Korolhrad in order to conform to Ukraine’s “Decommunization Law”. Citizens argued that the name originated prior to 1917 and created a petition which was signed by over three quarters of the city. Despite this, Rada ruled all -grad suffixed names required changing due to their Russian origins and communist connotations, and Korolgrad was no exception.

After the city was occupied by the NCC under Operation Bastion, Mayor Mykyta Salenko (1973-2028) proposed the name be changed internally within the NCC in order to honor the wishes of the dead. The proposal was accepted shortly after Mayor Salenko’s death on 21 December 2028.

It is speculated the NCC originally made the decision to turn Korolgrad into a Bastion due to its naturally advantageous location and access to the Korol river, which was unlikely to be affected by the spread of radiation from the Kaliningrad accident. The river did remain indirectly unaffected as predicted, though the great majority of farmland surrounding Korolgrad is now unable to grow crops due to the extreme environmental conditions caused by the accident.”

The city, river, and mountains are fictional but the rest should be in line with actual Ukrainian history. This is written from an IC perspective and may or may not be biased as a result.

Second is RedFaction who will join as an operator and assist with the Lore alongside @marvolo. RedFaction is a talented roleplayer and writer with years of experience under his belt. He has experience in a variety of roleplaying communities both within and outside of DayZ Standalone, and we are excited to see him bring that experience to BastionRP!
