Hello and welcome to the first SITREP for the BastionRP community! These posts will be made on a bi-weekly basis and will showcase updates from our talented development team alongside other tidbits of information pertaining to the state of the server.  We hope to share much with you within the following weeks and months as a lot is being worked on behind the scenes and we will keep you up to date as to our status.

Before we start, some of you may be wondering - what is BastionRP?

BastionRP is a total conversion roleplay community for DayZ Standalone, featuring a custom map, mods, rules, and lore built in-house specifically for our community. Our lore takes place in a world where a deadly bioweapon released in an "accident" at a Russian nuclear weapon storage facility has wiped out most of the world's population and brought modern civilization to its knees. In the wake of this disaster a military dictatorship known as the NATO-CSTO Coalition (NCC) has seized power over much of Europe and Russia, though parts of North America also remain under their control. In one such city - Korolgrad - players must find their own means to survive under their harsh rule. Some prefer living quietly within the system, others exploit the system or reject it entirely and attempt to escape and start anew.

The day-to-day gameplay of the server is wildly different than your normal DayZ Standalone server, or even your normal DayZ Standalone roleplaying experience. Instead of providing an experience where players are left to their own devices on the map, players all spawn together in the walled-off city of Korolgrad, where they play as subjugated citizens under the rule of the authoritarian NCC. Whilst the city may provide security, strict in-character rules are imposed on all living within it (for your safety, of course); citizens are not permitted to leave the city due to infection risk, and items such as food, clothing, and weapons are harshly controlled and regulated.

In Korolgrad, social status is everything. If you play by the rules, the NCC could afford you luxuries unavailable to common citizens - better apartments, higher quality food, even respect. Aligning yourself with the NCC has its own benefits, but you risk making new enemies in the process. Those that refuse to obey are subject to punishment ranging from simple beatings or loss of rations to outright death, depending on the severity of their crime. Since humans have become one of the most prized resources in our new world, the NCC generally tries not to kill in all but the most severe of circumstances. As a result, permadeath is a very real possibility for players who choose to openly rebel or attract too much unwanted attention from the NCC.

For players dissatisfied within the confines of Korolgrad, a second option may present itself... escape. A variety of methods and pathways to sneak out of the city are always present, for those who know where and when to look. Outside the walls exists a vast wasteland, devoid of NCC presence but filled with its own dangers and challenges such as hyper-lethal infected, contaminated zones, and other desperate survivors. All resources in this wilderness are scarce, and NCC patrols in popular zones often means escapees will eventually have to sneak back into the city to resupply, or find new and inventive strategies to prosper beyond the walls.

Veteran players will have the ability to apply to the NCC's ranks and explore the other side of BastionRP, from the eyes of the oppressors. The NCC has a number of overarching objectives alongside continually maintaining civility within the city, so tasks such as patrols, supply runs and rule enforcement can all be expected. Downtime will give you the chance to enjoy the perks of power, making it easier to forget about the problems of yesterday and look forward to a future dominated by the NCC!

We're also looking forward to seeing what players come up with to add to our dynamic. We have room for black market organizations, decentralized freedom fighters, pro-NCC networks of snitches, information dealers, underground vigilante gangs, roving bandits...

BastionRP is an ambitious project the likes of which has not yet been seen on DayZ Standalone or in DayZ Roleplaying as a whole. However, our team is dedicated to making this concept a reality!

Introducing the Team

The first order of business is to introduce our staff team at BastionRP. We're a gathering of dedicated people that drive this project towards success and release. We have a host of talented and experienced individuals that are working with us in this ambitious endeavor and it is my pleasure to introduce them to you all!

Leadership Team

The Leadership team is comprised of the 4 core members of the project who each oversee a critical aspect of the project. They will be the ones to take charge and direct us towards release.

Cipher
Project Lead

Cipher is a seasoned leader in various endeavors would it be about DayZ, roleplaying or otherwise. He has been playing DayZ for the better part of 6 years and roleplaying for 10. He has run a community before, so he’s very excited to take on this challenge as our Project Lead. This role will see him oversee the entirety of BastionRP; as our lead, he will steer the project and community where it needs to go.

Hex
Creative Director

Hex is an experienced roleplayer and DayZ player. He has been playing and crafting experiences ever since the original DayZ ArmA 2 mod was made. He has assisted in the administration and moderation of various communities and servers. He has taken the responsibility of Creative Director which will help drive and focus our efforts in the development of the mod, map, assets, and lore to make sure it stays true to our vision.

Cookie
Director of Development

Cookie has over 7 years of developing and modding experience under his belt. He is proficient in various coding languages and asset building tools and will help shape our server with the rest of the development team as it’s Director.

Covert
Director of Administration

Covert is a talented leader and administrators as he has helped various communities and projects in the past. With close to 7 years of DayZ experience, he definitely has a passion for the game and community. As our Director of Administration, he will lead our staff team and run the day to day aspects of the community to ensure everyone’s enjoyment.

Bastion Staff

The Bastion Staff will be tasked with all of the day to day operations within the community. They will handle the monitoring of the forums and the game server as well as handle various reports and appeals from the community members. The Bastion staff will be comprised of four core roles.

Administrators

Administrators are in charge of the server from a day-to-day level. Under the guidance of the Director of Administration, they will ensure that all reports and appeals are taken care of and handle in-game issues.

James
Administrator

James spent the better part of 7 years roleplaying specifically in DayZ.  He is a veteran of the DayZ roleplaying scene, making himself known in various communities where his characters always create an unmistakable impact. He will be joining in our founding staff as an Administrator to oversee in-game moderation and the reports section.

Moderators

Moderators will be the go-to for all forum and website-related issues. They will handle and monitor the forums to ensure the quality of the posts and that good and respectful discourse is not disturbed.

We do not have any Moderators at this time.

Operators

Operators will be the watchful eyes of the staff on the game servers, making sure that no one is breaking any rules while in-game. The operators will have a very active role in ensuring the quality of gameplay is maintained everywhere in the game. These operators will be able to take on more roles and certifications as time goes on such as managing in-game events and so on.

marvolo
Operator

marvolo has been in the DayZ scene for a long time and even longer in the roleplaying scene as a whole. He seeks to create something truly original and compelling for the members as our main writer for the BastionRP lore. Once the community’s lore is set and the server launches he will be moving to assist the in-game moderation and events as an Operator.

Support Staff

Support members will take care of answering queries by community members and responding to the various questions people might have. This will be the apprenticeship rank used to acclimate a new team member to the environment before they pick a specialization within the staff team.

We do not have any support staff at this time.

Development Team

Our talented and experienced development team will help bring our vision to you all of you in the next few months. We have gathered the help of various recognizable DayZ modders that have already been invaluable to our efforts. The developers will all be in charge of a specific area of expertise as they craft the foundation that this community will stand upon.

ZeRoY
Lead Map Designer

ZeRoY is an experienced mapper that has been on the mod tools from the moment they were made available and has been building maps ever since. He has over a decade of experience in map-making in various games and engines and he’s looking forward to bring Korolgrad to life.

SIX
Programmer

SIX is a veteran developer for multiple DayZ related gaming communities, including Trump's Wall and PsiSyn Network. With experience in over five languages and two game engines under his belt, he has joined the project to provide programming and scripting assistance for the development of the BastionRP official mod.

ComatoseBadger
3D Artist

ComatoseBadger has worked on modding and modeling before most of us even played video games. He has been involved in mod projects like Forgotten Hope, Battlefield: Desert Combat and Surreal. His talents and experience are indisputable and he will be helping us here by modeling assets that we can use in our new world.

Hop
Texture Artist

Hop has made a name for himself within the DayZ community for his quality texturing works and various assets and mods uploaded to the workshop. What started as a simple hobby turned into true expertise and he is very excited to be bringing that expertise here to work with us.

We are currently in the process of onboarding some newer developers, so expect to see their introductions in the next SITREP!

Additionally, we are hiring for developers (who get paid actual money!), so if you are a developer looking for work, please send an email to cipher@bastionrp.com.

Last but not least,

Strider
Community Manager

I have been playing ArmA ever since the original ArmA 2 came out as a physical disc in 2009. I was very involved in the milsim scene for a while during my ArmA 2 days and ArmA 3. I did play a lot of DayZ once the original mod came out in 2012. Roleplaying has also been a core part of my journey here, I roleplayed back on Garry’s Mod and ArmA Life servers a long time ago and continue to do so. I hope to bring my experience here to be the community’s face as it were.

My role will be one of communications, I will be the one who most people refer to when wanting to address the staff or development team, then I can forward the questions and suggestions to the proper channels. So please if you ever have any inquires on the community my messages are always opened. I will also be handling our external affairs trying to branch out the community and present us to various people that could help us grow the server. If there’s anyone you would like to suggest to us, once again feel free to message me.

All great things come from small beginnings, as you can see; however, as the project progresses, our staff team will grow to meet demand.

With that out of the way,

Laying the Foundation

The first thing we want to share with all of you is the work that is currently going into our custom map crafted especially to suit Bastion’s needs. Our Lead Map Designer, ZeRoY, has been hard at work to start creating this brand new experience for BastionRP, and I have a few images to show of our very early stages. Keep in mind that all of this is subject to change in the following weeks.

What we are creating is Korolgrad, a 100 square kilometer fictional area in Northern Ukraine that has been converted into one of the NCC's safe zones, or "Bastions".

spacer.png

These pictures come from the center of the map, which will become host to the city of Korolgrad, the largest urban area in DayZ Standalone. The models and buildings are subject to be replaced as we develop more assets, but for now they should give a definite “feel” to the City. The last picture showcases the satellite map of the terrain and the dimensions we are aiming for. The map will cover a surface of 10x10 km square which is a very sizable distance. Plenty of vistas and areas of interest await those daring enough to face the dangers outside the walls; more on that in later SITREPs. For now, have some screenshots provided by ZeRoY:

Notice the custom wall model by ComatoseBadger!

Next up is to talk about the custom mod that will be made for BastionRP, which will be as close as a total conversion of DayZ as possible. It will boast many features including, but not limited to, the following:

  • GUID-based spawn locations
  • Player grouping for the various factions in play
  • A dynamic, player-driven economy with currency
  • Custom weapons, clothing, and various other items
  • Contaminated zones that require certain clothing to enter safely
  • Traders and vendors with changing inventories
  • Mission/quest generation system

And more as we go on!

Many of those features will come later on as DayZ itself advances and allows us greater flexibility with the mod tools. For now that list is a set of objectives we want to have as part of the core BastionRP experience, though we'll likely be focusing on features like traders and quests post-launch.

Regarding our custom asset pack, Hop and ComatoseBadger have been hard at work creating assets for the game servers. As you've seen above, ComatoseBadger has made a custom wall model that will be used extensively around the city. Hop has been placed in charge of the creation of custom weapons for the server. We will have more to show in the coming SITREPs, but for now, these will have to do:

Finally, we'd like to shed a little light on the lore that will set the stage for all of the events that are to happen in-game.

Our Lore

As you already know, BastionRP is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the NATO-CSTO Coalition (NCC) control most of Europe, as well as parts of European Russia and North America. Although we'll be keeping a few little details and plot points under wraps, we still want to give you a glimpse into the kind of world BastionRP will be.

"The year is 2039. 12 years ago, a devastating accident at a weapons storage facility in Kaliningrad, Russia resulted in the detonation of an unknown number of nuclear warheads, as well as a mysterious bioweapon. In the wake of this disaster, an unlikely alliance is formed between East and West when NATO and CSTO opt to join forces and create the NCC in an attempt to better combat the disaster.

A rapid-response plan was put into action, and the NCC immediately dispatched troops to hundreds of urban centers to create the "Bastions" - walled cities and towns that would act as temporary safe havens until a full evacuation plan could be put into place. The plan was simple: provide aid, maintain supply lines, weather the storm, and hold for evacuation. For a while, the strength and resolve of the NCC prevailed... but eventually, supplies stopped arriving. Radios fell silent. Without supplies or supervision, the Bastions were forced to fend for themselves. Many fell into anarchy or were overrun by infected and abandoned, others remained resolute but starved when smog blocked out the sun.

Years later, the Bastions that successfully survived are able to re-establish contact with one another. They realise that they are the ones who must rebuild civilization and repopulate the Earth, yet this will not be an easy task. Outside the safety of their walls still exists many dangers - contaminated zones, crazed infected, and other groups with their own vision of how the new world should be. These isolated soldiers eventually decide to reform the NCC... but this new NCC is identical only in name and uniform; Bastions will now be ruled with an iron fist where citizens are forced to follow the rules or deal with the consequences of disobedience.

Rules within the Bastions gradually tightened until ordinary people found themselves stripped of their possessions and coerced into working for the NCC to produce goods and food to support efforts to rebuild. In return, the people are provided absolute security. Their lives are allowed to continue, and they are given rations to sustain themselves. Bastions that refuse to accept this new order are taken by force, and in a matter of years the NCC becomes the single largest faction on our post-apocalyptic Earth, yet they are not without enemy.

Various other (as yet unnamed) factions fight with the NCC and amongst themselves all around the globe. Unfortunately for the NCC, their total resources and manpower can only do so much, and so they have been compelled to fall back on offensive fronts, instead consolidating their limited strength in key areas. For this reason, they routinely move their most prized resource - humans - to areas deep within their European territory. Korolgrad is one such area, located in Northern Ukraine.

Korolgrad was one of the first Bastions that opted towards authoritarianism when the future became most bleak. Depending on the way you look at things, the sturdy walls that surround Korolgrad could be seen as either prison or salvation. Remember, the grass is always greener on the other side. There are always rumors of society beyond the walls, places where freedom still exist, hidden bunkers deep in forests, abandoned villages nestled in the mountains where words like “rebellion” and “uprising” can be spoken without fear of receiving a fractured skull in response... but is it worth it?"

We'll be elaborating on specifics in future SITREPs, so this is all you get in terms of story for now. We have one last thing we'd like to share with you: the logo we'll be using to represent the NCC in-game.

The Road Ahead

Obviously, this is just the beginning of a long and arduous road that we will have to take to bring this mod and community to it's fullest potential. We have an amazing, hardworking team that are dedicated to the community's success, and we will keep the community updated through these SITREPs every month.

Although we are very early in development, we want to release an Alpha build of our project as early as possible in order to allow players to begin enjoying the experience and provide us feedback on how to improve as we continue production. Therefore, we are targeting a launch date of late September to early October for the Alpha build of BastionRP!

Building this new experience takes talented individuals who we wish to compensate appropriately. Up until this point, this community has been funded almost entirely out of the pockets of the staff team. We have implemented a payment model to allow those that feel inclined to support us and the project to purchase Forum Privilege Packages and gain extra forum perks such as a larger avatar, profile music, custom profile backgrounds, custom username colors, and many more perks that are still in development. You can find this information on the Store page here.

We hope that this has been an informative and interesting read, and we thank you for sticking with us to the end of it. We hope you will continue to browse the forums and make yourself at home as we progress towards our Alpha launch. All of us at BastionRP are ecstatic to be able to work towards bringing a truly unique roleplaying experience to DayZ Standalone, and we can't thank you enough for your support. Expect the next SITREP in two weeks, where we will showcase more information and screenshots of our progress on all fronts, as well as an introduction to our unique set of rules that will provide a baseline for excellent roleplay.

If you want to stay even further up to date with our day-to-day progress, we've opened up a Discord that we will use to communicate with the community in realtime. Join it here!

Thanks again for reading, and we'll see you next time!
